Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling

Kerr manufactures horizontal boring pumps well suited for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). HDD is a trenchless construction technique, which uses guided drilling for creating an arc profile. This technique is used for long distance crossings such as under rivers, lagoons, landfalls or highly urbanized areas. The process involves three main stages: Piloting (drilling of a pilot hole), Reaming (pilot hole enlargement in stages, and Pullback (installation of the carrier pipe).

The HDD technique can be used in various ground conditions including hard rock, sand, silt, clay formations. The bore hole is supported by drilling fluid mainly consists of bentonite, which has several functions including transport of cuttings, cooling off drill bit, sealing and support the drilled hole, lubrication to reduce friction during pullback.
